SPARKING PASSION IN EMPLOYEES THROUGHOUT THE SUPPLY CHAIN
As a dynamic rice food company and one of Australia’s largest branded food exporters, SunRice has a strong focus on nurturing talented employees, such as Emma Tyrrell. With reach all over the world, the heart of the Australian rice industry is firmly in the Riverina in New South Wales, which is where Emma is based at SunRice’s Mill in Leeton.
Emma joined SunRice in 2009 after completing high school and started working as a Rice Cakes Line Operator. Before long, Emma was promoted to Safety Advisor, and then a Maintenance Planner. It was through these positions and working in maintenance that sparked Emma’s interest in electrotechnology. Emma explains her journey and what it has meant to her:
“As a Maintenance Planner I was working with the electricians and watching them troubleshoot issues with the plant, and I realised it was something I wanted to be able to do myself.
“SunRice has been a great support and I was able to start a Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician) in 2015 at TAFE NSW Leeton, from which I recently graduated.
“It’s been a great experience with SunRice because I’ve never stopped learning – there’s always been the opportunity for growth and it’s a great team and great people, with the bonus of being in my home town.
“As an electrician my day now consists of plant inspections and working on any breakdowns that may happen – we need to make sure that things keep running! But it’s also about continuous improvement and finding new ways to do things, so issues don’t arise again.”
